Quantum to Sue Apple Over The iPhone 2nd time?

Close on the heels of the trademark settlement with Cisco, Apple may soon find itself in more trouble, over the iPhone. UK based touch-sensor manufacturer, Quantum Research, has threatened to sue Apple if it finds that the company has infringed on its touch screen patent. Quantum is currently examining the phone for the same.

According to reports, Duncan Bryan, licensing director at Quantum Research said that the description of the iPhone suggests it uses a rear-surface touch screen, and has proximity sensing which can tell if it is held to the ear, which is a Quantum Research capability. He added that if Apple has used the charge transfer technology to give the iPhone that capability, then Apple could be infringing the firm's patent. This is the second attempt by Quantum, to warn Apple about infringing on its patent. The company had filed a case against Apple, for applying its patented charge transfer technology in the wheel control in iPod Nano. The first patent-infringement lawsuit, filed in December 2005 is still under process. Apple has denied those charges and has filed counterclaims against Quantum.

Jackson 'ready to convert to Islam'

Fallen pop star Michael Jackson is likely to convert to Islam, according to his brother Jermaine.
The Celebrity Big Brother star said Michael, 48, could do a lot of good by becoming a Muslim.
Jermaine, 52, told The Muslim News: "When I came back from Mecca I got him a lot of books and he asked me lots of things about my religion and I told him that it's peaceful and beautiful.
"He read everything and he was proud of me that I found something that would give me inner strength and peace.
"I think it is most probable that Michael will convert to Islam."
He added: "He could do so much, just like I am trying to do. Michael and I and the word of God, we could do so much."
Jermaine, who came second in the controversial Channel 4 reality show, converted to Islam in 1989.
His younger brother's comeback performance at the World Music Awards last year was slammed.
Michael had disappeared from public view after being acquitted of child abuse allegations, staying in Bahrain as a guest of the royal family.

Queens Of The Stone Age Get 'Vulgar' On New CD

Queens Of The Stone Age are eyeing a June release for their next Interscope album, which is dubbed "Era Vulgaris," according to a post on the group's Web site. Purported song titles include "Into the Hollow," "Misfit Love," "Battery Acid" and "Sick, Sick, Sick." "Could be song titles, or could not," the post continues. "Go sign up on the mailing list for future insider info. Then get off the Internet and go get laid -- its Valentine's Day." Frontman Josh Homme previously described the new album as "dark, hard, and electrical, sort of like a construction worker" in a video clip on the QOTSA site.

QOTSA has been relatively quiet in recent months, following the completion of touring in support of their 2005 album, "Lullabies to Paralyze." That set has sold 342,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and spawned the No. 2 Modern Rock hit "Little Sister."

"From Europe comes a beer just for dogs. But will they like it?

TIME puts the pooch hooch to a taste test on some of Europe's most favored pooches in Paris's Bois de Boulogne, near the up-scale 16th Arrondissement and a favorite walking spot of the city's finest pedigrees (both four- and two-legged varieties)."

LG Cries Foul Over iPhone Design

LG Electronics is reportedly accusing Apple of stealing the concept of its much-hyped iPhone from LG's own Prada model.

According to a Korean website, Woo-Young Kwak, head of LG Mobile Handset R&D Center,at a press conference said, "We consider that Apple copied Prada phone after the design was unveiled when it was presented in the iF Design Award and won the prize in September 2006."

While both phones were released around the same time, with roughly similar appearance, it was unclear which of the companies copied the design concept. Now, LG has openly declared that Apple is guilty for copying theirs. However, there is no news of a lawsuit against Apple yet.

Experts have pointed out that the two phones differ in many aspects. The KE850 Prada phone, which claims to be the world’s 'first completely touch screen mobile phone', is a tri-band GSM handset with EDGE support, unlike the quad-band iPhone. It has a small 3-inch screen, with a resolution of 240x400, while the iPhone's display is .5 inch larger, with a 320x480 resolution. Also, the KE850's user interface is flash-based, whereas the iPhone runs OSX. Moreover, the Prada has Bluetooth 2.0, unlike the iPhone, which has WiFi capability.

The LG KE850 Prada is expected to sell for around US$780 (roughly Rs. 34,364) which makes it more expensive than the iPhone's estimated $699.

Apple lost a patent lawsuit with Creative Technology, over the user interface of the iPod. Apple ended up paying $100 million to the company for copyright infringement.

Sony VGN-UX17GP Handheld PC

The Sony VGN-UX17GP is a light weight, ultra-compact, fully functional computer. This device is similar in hardware and dimensions (a screen lesser than 7 inches) specific to a UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC), but it is not one. Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) is a project initiated by Microsoft and is code-named Origami. Origami does not specifically refer to a device or a particular piece hardware but to an ultra-mobile PC that runs Windows Tablet Edition OS and now Vista Home Premium, and more importantly has Microsoft’s 'Touch Pack'—a suite with applications and utilities that are optimized for a touch screen operation. The devices that use Microsoft’s UMPC-origami platform come from Asus, Founder, Medion, OQO and Samsung.
The VGN-UX17GP differs by running a full version of Windows XP Professional along with a touch sensitive screen powered by Sony’s own proprietary software. The device is powered by Intel’s 1.2 GHz Core Solo processor, 512MB of 400 MHz DDR2 memory, 30GB hard drive, Intel’s GMA 950 on-board graphics and weighs just 520 grams.

Conclusion

We have to admit that the Sony VGN-UX17GP is a nifty looking innovative device. It's feature packed with a brilliant quality touch screen, two motion sensing camera’s, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and to top it all it runs Windows XP Professional on an Intel 1.2 Ghz core solo processor and 512MB of RAM. All that in a device that fits your palm and weighs just 520 grams is simply remarkable. On the downside your productivity in terms of typing text is greatly hampered since you typically can only use your thumbs to work on the keypad. And its low 3 hour battery life and an expensive price tag—it costs Rs. 1,00,000, further downs its credibility. However, my recommendation would be the Dell XPS1210. Its 12-inch screen when customized with a 1.66 Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB RAM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a DVD Writer (the Sony doesn’t have an external optical drive bundled, internal is out of the question because of the size), a nine cell battery that lasts four and half hours and a Nvidia Go 7400 add-on PCIe graphics card, just costs Rs. 69,000. Though, the Dell weighs close to 2 Kilograms. But then it’s an ultra portable laptop v/s. a handheld device. In the end, however, its one's personal decision—You have the choice of opting either for Innovation, Ultra-compactness and Aesthetics (Sony VGN-UX17GP Handheld PC) or Practicality (Dell XPS1210).

Timberlake Makes It Look Easy In New York

Time flies when you're having fun. That certainly explains Justin Timberlake's professed surprise at Madison Square Garden Wednesday night, when the singer suddenly realized he hadn't played the venue since 2000. That's a whole 'nother time and place when it comes to pop music, especially when you consider Timberlake's last stand at MSG was when 'N Sync was still near the peak of its powers, albeit primed for a fall. But Timberlake's come a long way since then, so long that he's got nothing left to prove. If "Justified" establish him as a solo juggernaut, "FutureSex/LoveSounds" solidified his mega status. At this point in his career -- with millions of records sold, a string of gorgeous girlfriends, even the modest ability to poke fun at himself -- Timberlake doesn't need to do a damn thing to please anyone beside himself. He's in the increasingly rare position of having both the people and the critics on his side, and the enviable freedom to do whatever he wants.
