Inkless Pen That Will Last Almost Forever

This stainless steel pen is not your average pen. It is an inkless pen that will probably never stop writing in your lifetime.

The metal ‘nib’ is made of a metal alloy that leaves a mark on most types of paper. If written on the typical papers used in printers and copiers, the mark it leaves is akin to those made by a pencil. However, the mark is not erasable.

Available from Grand Illusions at £14.99 (US$29.38).

The Other Foot

While recording Switchfoot's new Columbia project, "Oh! Gravity," lead vocalist Jon Foreman says part of the goal was to erase the boundary between artist and audience. So the band devised ways to make the fans part of the process. "In music, the band is only half of the equation," Foreman says. "The other half is the listening public. The word fan is awkward ... For me, it's a partnership." The band launched a contest offering one fan the chance to play cowbell on the song "Amateur Lovers," garnering 22,000 entries. A webcam was also set up to allow for 24-hour access into the studio sessions. "The whole cowbell contest was about how do we blur the line between who we are as a band and the people who listen to us," Foreman says. "Oh! Gravity," which streets Dec. 26, is the San Diego-based band's sixth studio album and its third for Columbia. The band is also distributed to the Christian market through EMI Christian Music Group. Switchfoot's first Columbia effort, "The Beautiful Letdown," has sold 2.6 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, spawning the hits "Meant To Live" and "Dare You To Move." Last year's "Nothing Is Sound," has sold 549,000 units. The new album contains the same caliber of thought-provoking, articulate lyrics that the band has become known for, but it rocks harder and has a more aggressive sound. Such songs as the title track and "American Dream" have an edgy, punk rock intensity, while "30 Second Hands" boasts an alt-country rock vibe.

Humping Dog For USB. Oh My Eyes!

Here’s one for the sick minded readers who find perverted joy in watching a plastic dog humping their laptop. Digital World Tokyo is selling them at $20 each (White Dog, Brown Dog, Chocolate Dog), or $55 for the full set of three.
Here’s a video of it in action (check out that mosaic). It hurts my eyes, so I’m not posting the video here!

The Apple Logo Birthmark

How I wish I’m the little kid. Because who knows, Steve Jobs might just decide to sponsor him/her with free lifetime iPod upgrades!
If you would excuse me, I’m gonna go stare at some logos now. My future kid might just sport some spiffy Sony, Nokia and Canon logo birthmarks if I do it faithfully everyday.

Top 2 Peripherals To Gift This Christmas

Christmas is around the corner and there is nothing that will excite a geek more than computer goodies. We have outlined an assortment of computer peripherals that are among the best in their class. Though a little expensive to put your hard earned money in, it will surely make for a Christmas to remember.

Creative GigaWorks S750 700 Watts 7.1 Speaker (Rs. 31, 750)

This 7.1 speaker system from Creative is targeted towards hard core gamers and movie buffs. The addition in this 7.1 speaker set-up as compared to the now common 5.1 channel set-up is that it has two additional satellites that are used as rear channels. These extra channels are specially beneficial to gamers since 7.1 discrete channels can be rendered in PC games by Microsoft’s DirectSound and Creative’s EAX technology. By 7.1 discrete, we mean that the sound coming from each satellite is independent and not two channels have the same sound. All the seven satellites are two-way speakers i.e. they are meant to reproduce mids and highs with the bass left to the powerful 210 Watts RMS woofer. The satellites are built with a 3.5 inch polymer mid-range driver and a 1 inch titanium driver and are powered at 70 watts RMS each. It sports a wired control module that features an upmixing button, letting you toggle between off, 5.1 to 6.1 and 5.1 to 7.1 along with buttons for controlling the volume. One thing that annoyed us about the control module were the status LEDs. We would have appreciated a more informative text display as in the case of the Logitech Z5500. The s750 also comes with a remote. And if your don’t trust our opinion, take this — The s750 is certified to meet the rigorous performance standards of THX specifications.

Targus TSB408 Laptop Backpack ( Rs. 4,838)

Gone are the days when laptops were just accessible to high flying executives. Now even students use laptops. And the shoulder carry bag which makes you look like a salesman is definitely not something they would fancy. Enter the new breed of Laptop backpacks. They are trendy, pack in a lot more stuff and free both your hands. And when you actually get down to buying one, there is nothing that can beat Targus. In fact, almost all the HP and Compaq laptops bags are made by Targus. The Targus TSB408 is designed to fit, at the max, a 15.4 inch laptop. It comes with a padded computer compartment to protect your laptop and multiple other compartments to fit in every file or gadget you can think of, even your water bottle. The shoulders are padded to reduce stress from heavy weight. It also comes with a Velcro phone pouch that can be placed anywhere on the padded shoulder.

Beyonce Begins Third Week Atop The Hot 100

Beyonce's "Irreplaceable" begins a third week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and also sits at No. 1 on the Pop 100 for a second week and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for a fourth. The track had been the Hot 100's greatest airplay gainer for six weeks, but that distinction is claimed this week by Ciara's "Promise," which rises 14-11.The top tier of the Hot 100 doesn't show much movement, as Akon's "I Wanna Love You" featuring Snoop Dogg holds at No. 2 and his "Smack That" featuring Eminem inches up 4-3. Fergie's "Fergalicious" slips 3-4, while Justin Timberlake's "My Love" featuring T.I. remains at No. 5 and Nelly Furtado's "Say It Right" stands firm at No. 6.The top 10 is rounded out by Jim Jones' "We Fly High," up 8-7, the Fray's "How To Save a Life," up 9-8, Bow Wow's "Shortie Like Mine" featuring Chris Brown and Johnta Austin, up 10-9, and Hinder's "Lips of An Angel," which creeps 11-10.The chart's top debut this week is a cover of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Happy X-mas (War Is Over)" by the Fray, which opens at No. 50. The original was released in 1971 but had never previously charted on the Hot 100. The same song enters the top 10 of the Adult Contemporary tally this week at No. 7, in a version recorded by Sarah McLachlan.

My Chemical Romance Bringing Album To Life On Tour

My Chemical Romance will kick off a North American arena tour Feb. 22 in Manchester, N.H., in support of its new Reprise album, "The Black Parade." The trek will feature support from Rise Against and Muse; dates are booked through March 16 in Reno, Nev., but more will be added to the itinerary."We're going to retain the essence of a rock show," frontman Gerard Way told Billboard.com of the tour last week. It's not going to be like seeing [Pink Floyd's] 'The Wall.' It's going to bring the music and the band and the record to life. It's going to be theatrical without detracting from [the music]; it's not going to be surface over substance."Way added that My Chemical Romance will perform part of the show as the Black Parade, the circus-like alter ego it adopts on the new album. "We're really focusing on being great performers, then the theatrics will come into play," he said. Before the North American dates, the band will head to Australia and New Zealand for the Big Day Out tour. The group is also already booked for the Bamboozle festival in early May in New Jersey.

'Legends of India' now on Nokia Nseries

Nokia has collaborated with the Indian Music Industry (IMI), to announce the 'Legends of India' initiative, for Nokia Nseries Music edition devices. Ghazal singer, Jagjit Singh unveiled the offering, which provides 100 preloaded songs by 10 Indian artistes, such as RD Burman, Asha Bhosle and Jagjit Singh, among others. The 'Legends of India', available on the recently launched, Nokia N91, N71 and N70, offers the DRM- compliant songs across genres ranging from Hindi film music, devotional, ghazals and remixes.

Vineet Taneja, director, Multimedia, Nokia (India) said, "Mobile devices have emerged as one of the most preferred mediums for listening to music as is also evident from the fact that over 280 million MP3 enabled devices are expected to be sold by 2010. Nokia Nseries will drive the trend and continue to introduce initiatives to deliver a superior music experience. We are confident that our new initiative will contribute towards promoting the music ecosystem at large, and help the Indian music industry to regularize the distribution of legal music content."The Nokia Nseries music edition devices comply with the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) 2.0 DRM standard, in collaboration with Microsoft.

Metric Leaning Mellower With New Songs

Canadian rock act Metric has started work on its follow-up to 2005's "Live It Out," and some changes may be afoot, according to singe/-keyboardist Emily Haines."I can already see how my work on 'Knives' has affected the direction of the next Metric record, which is cool," Haines tells Billboard.com, referencing her laidback solo album "Knives Don't Have Your Back." "We're making up lots of music in a bit mellower vibe. It's always nice to check yourself, see if you can explore different moods as a writer. But we'll probably do so many songs, who knows how the final record will sound."Metric spent part of December in a "secret" studio outside of Seattle, and Haines describes the session as "the opening stages of just hanging out somewhere and working on music. It's just writing at this stage."

Local Virtual Mobile Mart Launched

Ikon infoservices has launched www.SMS.in that allows users to browse and discover features compatible with their personal handsets for free.

A prepaid account with www.SMS.in, will allow users to download mobile ringtones, games, wallpapers, logos, themes and send text messages of 160+ characters from their computer to any GSM-enabled handset. On registration, users will be allowed three free SMS messages.According to Kaushal Gandhi, director, www.SMS.in, Indian mobile users are tired of having to ape Western concepts in handset personalization and many people choose not to upgrade their mobiles because the available themes are outdated, boring and incompatible with their mindsets. "www.SMS.in was launched as an affordable, no-nonsense alternative", said Gandhi. "We have cut out all the hard-sell elements one encounters on Western mobile enhancement websites. Indian consumers are too intelligent to fall for overt advertisement gimmicks — they know what they want, and only need to see the available options. www.SMS.in's website has been styled on the supermarket concept – 'walk' in, browse around, take what appeals the most, pay a very reasonable price for it and get on with your life."Gandhi believes that India is at a nascent stage in exploring, what he calls, "this fascinating business genre". "As the concept pioneers, www.SMS.in will lead the way and introduce new features and products on a war footing. We have tied up with the most innovative mobile program developers to help us maintain the cutting edge. Very shortly, we will be introducing features such as a birthday reminder service, a group SMS facility, a SMS joke database and a unique coupon code to help the customer gets extended value for money," said Gandhi.

A subsidiary site, MTVgoesgold.com, is hosting a contest awarding five people an all-expense paid trip to the Big Apple for the taping.

Sony Ericsson Z610i

Sony Ericsson may have made big headlines with their slim 'Ai' concept phone, but the current line up of phones seem entirely oblivious to the success of the slim RAZRs. The Z series of mostly women-oriented phones continue putting on pounds with the new Z610i.

Design

The phone has a very glossy, mirror finish on the top, just like the Motorola KRZR K1. The Z610i also has an external display that's hidden away underneath the shell, however, it's a monochrome display unlike the KRZR's. But even then, it does look better since you can't see the edges of the display; you only see the text from outside. Also, text is more legible on the Z610i's mono display compared to the KRZR's color display.

As mentioned before, the Z610i is a pretty thick 2cm phone that I didn't feel like carrying around in my trouser pockets. Even in the hand, it felt quite bulky. The phone is also considerably heavy at 110gm. The inside of the phone shows off a large 2.0-inch screen, but it is marred by a low resolution of 176x220 only, though it shows 262k colors. Most of the text is too large for comfort and graphics don't look as sharp as you would expect a 2.0-inch display to show. The aforementioned external display is 128x36 pixels.

The keypad is well spaced out, but the keys are too flat, making the Z610i a fast-typer's nightmare. Even the backlight of the keypad is quite low and the very finely printed text and numbers are not easily visible. On the other hand, the 5-way navigation pad was a decent experience and should present no problems like the joystick on the K700i/K750i does.

Tech

The tri-band only, EDGE-lacking GSM/GPRS radio on the Z610i may not sound too interesting, but the phone does have 3G support with video calling, Bluetooth stereo A2DP and a driverless USB 2.0 interface that you can just drag and drop from. You do need the proprietory USB connector, but you won't need to carry around your driver CD. I still prefer the KRZR's standard miniUSB connector, but the driverless feature is a good step.
The phone memory is only 16 MB, but the Memory Stick Micro (M2) slot gives you the option to upgrade.
Browsing the web on the Z610i is nice with the built-in NetFront XHTML web browser. The lack of EDGE is a disappointment, though.

Conclusion

For Rs. 16,000, I feel the KRZR K1 is a better option. It doesn't have 3G, but it has EDGE and that makes more sense our side of the world. It has more internal memory and a more standard microSD slot compared to the Z610's M2. The battery life of the KRZR is also better. Still, more women around the office liked the Z610i at first look, compared to the RAZR’s first reaction, so there you go.

The Sweet Escape GWEN STEFANI

There can be no doubt Gwen Stefani feels the allure of being a solo artist—and who can blame her after selling 7 million copies of 2004's "Love.Angel.Music.Baby." Its follow-up comes more quickly than anticipated—especially since a return to No Doubt was expected first—and doesn't stray too far from the heavily referential terrain she mined the first time. Stefani and the Neptunes work the "Hollaback Girl" route again on the rhythm-driven "disco Tetris" of "Yummy" and incorporate a bit of mid-'80s vintage Prince into "U Started It," while she and No Doubt's Tony Kanal revisit the group's "Hella Good" on "Fluorescent." Stefani's Madonna reverence remains intact on "Early Winter" (co-written with Keane's Tim Rice-Oxley) and "4 in the Morning," and her collaboration with Linda Perry on the album-closing "Wonderful Life" channels the distinct influence of Depeche Mode. All spun together it works well, and maybe even better than on the debut. There is a dark and melancholy lyrical bent that is surprising for someone who is enjoying marriage, motherhood and millions of album sales. But Stefani knows she's got it good, too, from "The Sound of Music" yodels in "Wind It Up" to the buoyant "whee-hoos" of the title track team-up with Akon.—GG

Eurone MP899

This is a fake iPod Nano. There’s no use beating around the bush or trying to hide that fact. While the original iPod Nano goes for around Rs. 9,800 for the 2GB version, this fake Nano drops to as low as Rs. 1,600 for 1GB and Rs. 2,050 for the 2GB version. Is it worth the price? Or is it just crappy Chinese rubbish? Let’s take a look. The unmistakably iPod Nano-like MP3 player has been sold in local markets and online by a variety of names, such as 'iPod-Style', 'Slim MP4 player', 'Apro' and the really cheeky 'Jano'. This 'Eurone' is a Mediatech-marketed model that costs a whole lot more—Rs. 6,500 is the MRP!

The original iPod plays music and lets you see photos. That’s it. But the fake Nano plays music (MP3, WMA, WAV), has an FM radio tuner, has a movie player (WMV, ASF, AMV), a picture viewer (JPEG), an e-book (TXT) reader, a voice/FM recorder, a phonebook application and also a few games. This is a bucket load of features and there’s probably nothing else you can think of adding to any portable media player. Just add a GSM phone, some WiFi or Bluetooth, an Office document viewer and it will be the only device you’ll ever need for anything. The player is very, very close to the older iPod Nano in dimensions, just being a millimeter thicker. It has the glossy black front side and the shiny stainless steel rear side, although I’m not sure this is actually stainless steel. The fake Nano is as light, and has a more square screen that’s a longer in height, but a bit shorter in width.

The familiar wheel is also present on this fake Nano, but it doesn’t really work like the touch-sensitive iPod wheel, of course. It’s a basic five-way wheel that clicks, but doesn’t scroll. The 'Menu' text is replaced by 'M', the Play/Pause button is moved to the center and the lower key becomes the volume button. The volume button just activates the volume setting, and you need to use the Back/Next buttons to adjust the volume, so this is a two-step procedure that I don’t quite like. The hold button on the top of the Nano is the on/off switch in the fake Nano

U2 Wraps Vertigo Tour With Honolulu Blowout

U2 wrapped its box-office busting Vertigo tour last night (Dec. 9) in front of a packed house at Honolulu’s Aloha Stadium with a show that featured guest turns from members of opening act Pearl Jam as well as Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong. Several members of the audience were pulled onto the stage as well, including one lucky man who got to play piano with the band during “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses."The 24-song set began as usual with “City of Blinding Lights,” from the group’s 2004 album “How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb,” as Bono ran the gamut of the heart-shaped stage extension waving the American flag. Other early set highlights included “I Will Follow,” “Angel of Harlem” and “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” during which a little girl sat with Bono atop the stage monitors.U2 guitarist the Edge was saluted on a number of occasions, with Bono crediting his “grace under pressure, faith and perseverance.” Although no formal announcement was ever made, it is understood U2 postponed several Vertigo dates from spring to this fall while a member of the Edge’s immediate family underwent treatment for a life-threatening disease. The main set wound down with a trio of smash hits: “(Pride) In the Name of Love,” “Where the Streets Have No Name” and “One,” with fans encouraged to hold their cell phone aloft during the latter as a show of solidarity for the Make Poverty History campaign.Armstrong was a surprise guest for a cover of Scottish punk band the Skis’ “The Saints Are Coming,” which U2 and Green Day recorded as a charity single for the Music Rising initiative. Armstrong had only performed the track live with the band once before.
CM8ShowAd("Middle");
document.write('');Afterward, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready joined U2 for Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World,” which they debuted, with new lyrics, last month during an anti-poverty benefit in Australia. The show closed with a subdued rendering of “All I Want Is You,” as drummer Larry Mullen Jr. sent the crowd home with a smile: “See you soon.”Soon will likely be in 2008, U2 manager Paul McGuinness tells Billboard.com. U2 will first regroup in the studio, with an eye on releasing its next album by late 2007. And although final numbers are not yet in, the Vertigo tour is already the second-highest grossing trek of all time behind the Rolling Stones’ A Bigger Bang, with its total expected to exceed $377 million. In a rare opening slot, Pearl Jam charged through a 13-song set heavy on favorites like “Corduroy,” “Better Man,” “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town,” “Even Flow” and “Alive.” The Seattle band wrapped its performance with a cover of the Who’s “Baba O’Riley” that worked the crowd into a frenzy.A number of Hollywood celebrities were on hand for the show, including Jeremy Piven, Mira Sorvino and Alyssa Milano.

Eminem Presents: The Re-Up

On the title track of this Shady Records compilation, Eminem declares—less than a year-and-a-half into his wildly overstated "retirement"—that "this music is in us, and it's not over 'til we say it's finished." The evidence on this 22-track set indicates they're a long way from that point, too. Conceived as a mixtape, "The Re-Up" boasts bona fide star power via nine new Eminem performances, four appearances by 50 Cent and various permutations of D12—along with Obie Trice and Akon (with a remix of his chart-topping "Smack That"). The real point of the album, however, is to introduce new Shady MCs Stat Quo, Bobby Creekwater and Ca$his. Despite meticulous production, "The Re-Up" retains some of the spare, raw feel of an underground release, its tracks comprised mostly of Dr. Dre-styled keyboards and tight, airy beats that leave plenty of room for the rappers to spit at such targets as Mariah Carey (although 50 Cent offers props to estranged protégé the Game at one point). Among the most intriguing moments are Eminem's characteristically defiant "Public Enemy" and "No Apologies," the playful 50 Cent duets "The Re-Up" and "Jimmy Crack Corn," the minute-long "Trapped" from late D12 founder Proof and Creekwater's old school-styled "There He Is."—GG

PS3 Makes You do Bad Things

From the time it's been launched, the PS3 has added to the already existing high crime rate with people being shot, murdered or robbed for the PS3, and now we have two officers of the law using their 'authoriteh' to get a piece of Sony’s next gen console.

Yup, you heard right, two Rhode Island police officers and five other of their friends cut in line at launch day to get their hands on the PS3. While the officers feel they haven't done anything wrong, their superior hasn't taken this very lightly and has promised to discipline them. The security guards who let the group cut in line have been fired.See? I told you its got evil powers.

What goes around Justin Timberlake

Timberlake finally gets down to the business of making music after releasing two novelty —albeit No. 1 Billboard Hot 100—singles, "SexyBack" and "My Love." "What Goes Around . . . " is a quiet midtempo soul jam with subtle Middle Eastern influences that actually possesses the songwriting savvy to maintain relevance after its initial flush at radio. Timberlake employs his falsetto amid fast-talking verses reminiscent of Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together," as he talks smack to the woman who let him down: "You had me in the palm of your hand/So why your love went away/I just can't seem to understand." To call this "Cry Me a River" part two is among the greatest compliments we can muster, given the disposable quality of the two previous releases. As top 40's only pop male staple, sounds like three in a row for Timberlake. Well done. —Chuck Taylor

Best MP3 Phones Under Rs. 10,000

Some of you don’t care about video playback or camera or even FM radio—all you want to do is play music. Under Rs. 10,000, you don’t have too many fancy options with too much space, but you can still pick up a few decent bargains and make do with them. Let’s go drop the bass (or lack of it)!

Sony Ericsson W300i (Rs. 9,500)

The Sony Ericssion W300i Walkman phone is a chunky little clamshell that plays back MP3 and AAC music files. It also has an FM radio tuner. It comes with Sony’s MegaBass technology that enhances low frequencies for better bass response via a pair of really good earphones. It has an external display that shows the track information when listening to music. The phone comes with 20MB of phone memory and a Memory Stick Micro (M2) expansion slot. The camera is low res VGA (0.3 megapixel), but the sound quality is good.

Motorola RAZR V3i (Rs. 9,000)

You know all about the phone, so let me just tell you why it makes for a good MP3 player: MP3, AAC, WMA and RealAudio playback support, 8.5mb of phone memory with a microSD/TransFlash card slot (up to 512MB), and an external color display that shows you the track that’s playing. This doesn’t have an FM radio tuner, but it’s the sleekest of the lot.

Samsung SGH-X700 (Rs. 8,700)

For the candy bar-style crowd, there’s the superb, all-in-one Samsung SGH-X700 that gives you MP3 and AAC music playback, an FM radio tuner, 35MB of phone memory with a microSD/TransFlash memory card slot.

Sony Ericsson K750i (Rs. 10,000)

Will this phone ever stay away from any of our top lists?? The K750i has MP3 and AAC playback support, FM radio and 34MB of phone memory with a Memory Stick PRO/Duo memory card slot. It has USB Mass Storage support, so you can drag and drop your tunes on it directly.

Haier M260 (Rs. 10,300)

A new entrant on the scene, the Haier M260 has MP3 playback support, an FM radio tuner, miniSD memory card support, and a 1.8-inch touch-sensitive screen and stylus, though it’s only 128x160 pixels. If you get it, you’ll need a memory card reader, as there’s no Bluetooth or USB support in this phone. An off-beat choice.
